The New Castle Trojans claimed the Class 3A state volleyball championship Saturday, sweeping Brebeuf Jesuit in three sets, 25-11, 25-20, 25-15.
The Trojans finished 34-6 on the season. New Castle, which also won its first HHC volleyball championship this season, became a two-time state champion. New Castle also won the 4A volleyball title in 2007.
Mabrey Shaffmaster had 19 kills and hit for a .630 percentage. Melani Shaffmaster had 13 kills, three aces 24 assists. Zoe Conway had three aces. As a team, New Castle was 46-of-79 and hit for a state-record .494 percentage.
The victory was the seventh volleyball state championship won by an active Hoosier Heritage Conference member. Delta and Yorktown have each won three titles. HHC teams have won 17 state championships while members of the conference and 27 state titles overall. New Castle’s title was the conference’s third state champion in a calendar year – with Yorktown winning the 4A volleyball title in the fall of 2016 and New Palestine the 3A softball title in 2017.
