Player of the Week

Claire Ertel, Mt. Vernon

Ertel had 48 kills and 64 digs in six matches as the Marauders started the year with a 6-0 record. Ertel was one of several Marauders who had big nights in a five-set victory over Cathedral Aug. 13, when she had 16 kills and 26 digs.

News and notes

3A #1 New Castle opened conference play Saturday with a victory over Delta, 25-20, 25-18, 25-22. Mabrey Shaffmaster had 22 kills for the Trojans. Mayzie Hinkle had 10 kills for Delta.

4A #1 Yorktown had an impressive victory to open the week, sweeping #3 Avon in three sets Saturday. The Tigers also defeated a Lawrence North team that is receiving votes. Kylie Murr had 75 digs and Courtney Watkins 42 kills on the week.

Mt. Vernon has had an impressive start, going 6-0 to start the year, bolstered by a five-set Tuesday victory over 4A #8 Cathedral. Claire Ertel had 16 kills and 26 digs, Victoria Bulmahn 47 assists and 10 digs, and Cecilia Bulmahn 24 kills and 17 digs in the match. MV later won the Ritter Invitational, going 4-0.

Greenfield-Central’s Molly Broome was the MaxPreps/AVCA Player of the Week for the first week. Ava Antic had 41 kills and 31 digs in four matches to lead the Cougars to a 4-0 mark.

Gracie King (67 kkills) and Avery Ross (65 kills) have helped lead Pendleton Heights to a 6-1 start this season, including 3-1 at the Covenant Christian Invitational.

HHC teams are 24-6 against non-league foes.

Key upcoming matches

Tue: Delta at Yorktown

It’s 4A No. 1 Yorktown vs. 3A No. 2 Delta to start the season in a matchup of ranked teams. Yorktown is 4-0, while Delta looks for its first HHC victory. Kenzie Knuckles averages 4.7 k/s for Yorktown. Bella Dearinger totals 3.8 d/s for Delta.

Thurs: Mt. Vernon at Pendleton Heights

Two longtime rivals have had great starts to the year – PH is 6-1 and MV 6-0 – and will meet up in an early-season conference clash on the Arabians’ home court. Claire Ertel, Victoria Bulmahn and Cecilia Bulmahn all had double-doubles in matches last week for MV. PH has the HHC’s hitting leader in Gracie King.
