Players of the Week

Offense: Charlie Spegal, New Palestine

Spegal tallied a season-high 252 yards on 18 carries, playing one half of the Dragons’ win over Yorktown. He had six touchdowns and now has 15 scores for the season.

Defense: Tremor Bynum, Pendleton Heights

Bynum had three tackles for loss, three sacks, eight quarterback hurries and a forced fumble in the Arabians’ 49-14 victory over New Castle.

Special teams: Nate Southerland, Delta

Southerland blocked a punt and recovered it for a touchdown. He also blocked an extra point in the Eagles’ victory over Shelbyville. On defense, he had two sacks.

News and notes

New Palestine opened HHC play with an 81-13 victory at Yorktown, its 35th straight conference win. Charlie Spegal ran for 252 yards and six TDs, Zach Neligh threw for 206 yards and three TDs, and Colby Jenkins had 107 receiving yards for NP. Reid Neal wthrew for 209 yards for Yorktown. MiLon McCowan had 117 receiving yards.

Delta beat Shelbyville 84-20. The Eagles ran for 578 yards (15.6 ypc). Wesley Woodin ran for 142 yards and a TD on seven carries. Brady Hunt completed 5-of-6 for 118 yards. Shelby’s Matthew Merritt ran for 135.

Christian Conkling threw for 168 yards and three TDs – 101 yards and two TDs to Eli Pancol – in PH’s 49-14 win over New Castle. Pancol had 223 all-purpose yards. Drew Barber threw for 248 ayrds and Nicholas Grieser had 17 tackles for New Castle in the loss.

Tyson Harley threw for 269 yards and four TDs – 141 yards to Darell Jackson – in Mt. Vernon’s 56-21 win over Greenfield-Central. Gehrig Slunaker threw for 167 yards and Spencer Johnson ran for 119 in the loss.

Two kickers had big weeks last week. Zac Stanley of Delta was 12-for-12 on PATs and had five touchbacks against Shelbyville. Alex Kropp of New Palestine was 11-for-11 on PATs and kicked a 25-yard field goal.

Week 4 games

New Palestine at Mt. Vernon (broadcast)

One of two county rivalries this week matches up two teams who are 1-0 in the HHC. The annual Boundary Rail matchup marks the 51st season the two teams have played each other. Both have strong offenses – MV tallied 521 yards of offense last week, NP had 640 yards. This game matches up the HHC’s leading passer, MV’s Tyson Harley, against leading rusher Charlie Spegal of NP.

Delta at Yorktown (broadcast WXFN, DelCoSports)

Two more longtime rivals meet up at Yorktown. Delta scored 84 points last week behind a rushing attack that averaged 15.6 yards per carry. Wesley Woodin has 176 yards on the year. Yorktown’s Reid Neal has thrown for 544 yards and six TDs.

Pendleton Hts. at Greenfield-C. (broadcast WEEM, WSVX, WRGF)

The Arabians are 3-0 after a strong game last week. PH’s Eli Pancol has caught nine passes this season and scored on six of them. He averages 25.1 ypc. G-C had its best offensive game of the season last week, with freshman QB Gehrig Slunaker throwing for 167 yards.

New Castle at Shelbyville (broadcast WSVX)

Two teams enter looking for their first conference victories. The Trojans bring their aerial attack led by QB Drew Barber, the league’s second-leading passer, and top receiver Luke Bumbalough (18-321, 7 TDs). Veteran QB Landon Watson leads Shelbyville’s offense, which tallied three TDs last week. Watson threw for 158 yards last week.
