New Palestine wins state softball title

New Palestine capped an outstanding season with a record-breaking 13-6 victory over Kankakee Valley to win the IHSAA Class 3A state championship.

The Dragons won the fourth softball state title in school history – joining championships won in 2004, 2008 and 2009. It was the fifth softball state title won by a Hoosier Heritage Conference team, as Mt. Vernon also won a softball title in 2000.

Ashley Prange hit a three-run homer to key an eight-run fourth inning that gave the Dragons a 10-2 lead. NP had 17 hits – with Prange and Mary Crumlin each getting three hits. Crumlin doubled twice. Elisha Barker scattered 12 hits and allowed two earned runs to get the pitching win.

Barker was also named the Mental Attitude Award recipient.
