Players of the Week

G: Sophie Parker, Shelbyville

Parker scored twice in the Golden Bears’ 2-1 victory over New Castle, including an overtime winner to give Shelbyville a win in its first game of the year.

B: Tyler Murphy, Greenfield-Central

Murphy scored seven goals in four games, including both goals in a 2-0 Cougars victory over Lawrence North.

News & notes

Two HHC girls teams are ranked in Class 2A – New Palestine is #15 and Yorktown #19 in the ISCA poll.

The opening week featured one conference game for each the boys and girls. Sophie Parker scored twice for Shelbyville in its 2-1 win over New Castle. Lauren Ayres scored for the Trojans. Mt. Vernon’s boys defeated New Castle 6-0. Tylin Broaders and Brandon Johnson each had two goasls and an assist for the Marauders.

Monday evening, Mt. Vernon’s girls moved to 1-0 in the conference with a 3-1 win over Greenfield-Central. Alexi Hardie scored twice for the Marauders.

Mt. Vernon’s girls also opened the year with a 3-2 win over 2A No. 4 Chatard. Alexi Hardie had two assists in that match, and had four goals and two assists for the week.

Four conference games on tap this week. Thursday features two girls games – Greenfield-Central at Yorktown and New Palestine at New Castle. Saturday, New Castle travels to Delta.

On the boys side, one conference match is on the docket – Delta visits Mt. Vernon Thursday.

Other top girls performances from Week 1: G-C freshman Rita Aguye Cots had two goals and an assist vs. Warren Central. Allison Bell led Delta to a 4-2 victory over Muncie Central.

Other top boys performances from Week 1: Trae Hassbroek of Shelbyville had two hat tricks in two games. He also assisted on the game-winning goal in the Bears’ wild 7-5 win over Franklin, and drew the penalty kick that led to the second-half insurance goal.
