Players of the Week

Offense: Charlie Spegal, New Palestine

Spegal played two quarters of Friday’s opener for the Dragons. He ran for 222 yards and a school record seven touchdowns on 18 carries in a 77-0 victory over No. 8 Kokomo.

Defense: Brady Pease, Delta

Pease had 11 tackles, including one for loss, in the Eagles’ 35-6 season-opening victory over Muncie Central.

Special teams: Walker Moore, Yorktown

Moore averaged 40 yards per punt in the Tigers’ season-opening 31-9 victory over Anderson, including a long of 54 yards.

News and notes

HHC in the rankings: New Palestine moved up to No. 1 in Class 5A in the AP poll and No. 2 in the IFCA poll. The Dragons were No. 3 in both polls last week. Pendleton Heights is receiving votes in the IFCA Class 4A poll after beating No. 7 Mississinewa last week.

HHC teams had a strong start to the season, going 6-2 in the opening week. Two teams had victories over ranked teams – New Palestine (77-0 over 5A #8 Kokomo) and Pendleton Heights (31-30 over 4A #7 Mississinewa). This is the final week of non-conference play.

Nick Taylor kicked an 18-yard field goal in the final minute to rally PH past Mississinewa 31-30. PH rallied from a 24-14 third-quarter deficit. Kamden Earley ran for 122 yards.

Charlie Spegal set a New Palestine record with seven touchdowns in the Dragons’ victory over Kokomo.

Mt. Vernon’s 43-14 win over Hamilton Heights marked Mike Kirschner’s first victory as head coach of the Marauders. MV’s Tyson Harley threw for 240 yards.

Dominic Cantanzarite had a strong start in Yorktown’s win over Anderson, with three sacks. The Tigers’ Jamarius Evans blocked a punt.

New Castle’s Luke Bumbalough had four receiving touchdowns and 108 yards through the air.

This week

Center Grove at New Palestine

It’s the first-ever matchup between New Palestine and a 6A program as the Dragons host 6A #9/9 CG.

Marion at Mt. Vernon

The Marauders were impressive in Mike Kirschner’s debut. Marion beat Huntington North 47-0. The HHC was 7-2 against the NCC last year and is 3-0 this season.

Delta at Eastbrook

The Eagles face a perennial 2A power that has won two straight regional titles. Delta impressed in the opener.

Anderson at Pendleton Hts

Another county rivalry matchup sees the Indians visit the Arabians. PH has won six of the seven previous meetings and is looking to start 2-0 for the second straight year.

Muncie C. at Yorktown

The Tigers won this county rivalry matchup when Reid Neal threw a TD pass on the final play a year ago.

Greenfield-C. at Whiteland

G-C faces a Whiteland team that posted an impressive win against Columbus East last week.

Rushville at New Castle

The Trojans picked up where they left off a year ago last week. Rushville is 1-0.

Shelbyville at Franklin

The Golden Bears look to bounce back in Week 2 against a longtime rival.
