Players of the Week

Tegan Seyring, Yorktown

Seyring had a career-high 23 kills in the Tigers’ HHC championship-clinching victory over New Castle. She followed with 19 kills in a sweep of Center Grove.

Victoria Bulmahn, Mt. Vernon

Bulmahn had 21 kills, 11 blocks, 54 digs and 157 assists as MV went 4-1 on the week.

News and notes

Yorktown clinched its ninth HHC title in 10 years Thursday with a 22-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 victory over New Castle. Tegan Seyring had 23 kills and Kenzie Knuckles 14 for the Tigers. Kate Vinson had 46 assists and 12 digs, one of five Yorktown players with double-digit digs. Kylie Murr led the Tigers with 20. Mabrey Shaffmaster had 25 kills and 14 digs for the Trojans, who became the first team this season to take a set from Yorktown. Mabrey Shaffmaster had 37 assists and 17 digs.

Yorktown clinched an undefeated regular season Saturday with a three-set victory over Center Grove. The Tigers enter the postseason No. 1 in the 4A Z-Rating. New Castle also enters No. 1 in Class 3A.

The week featured two other HHC matches, both involving New Palestine. The Dragons beat Shelbyville 25-17, 25-9, 25-12 Tuesday behind 17 kills and 10 digs from Lydia Jones. Audrey Reinhart had 21 digs for Shelbyville. Thursday, Mt. Vernon beat New Palestine 25-20, 26-24, 25-20. Claire Ertel had 12 kills and 12 digs. Cecilia Bulmahn added 10 kills for MV. Kaelyn Armstrong had nine kills and 12 digs for NP.

All eight HHC teams finished with winning records. The league was 142-41 (.776) against non-conference competition this year.

Sectional play begins Tuesday. Four teams are at Greenfield-Central – the hosts, Mt. Vernon, New Palestine and Pendleton Heights. NP is the defending champion. Yorktown is the defending sectional champ at Fort Wayne North. New Castle is the defending 3A champ. The Trojans and Delta play at Wapahani. Shelbyville travels to Bloomington South.

Tournaments

Class 4A at Greenfield-C.

Four HHC teams – Greenfield-Central, Mt. Vernon, New Palestine and Pendleton Heights – join Richmond and Connersville. NP is the defending champ and has a bye. MV also drew a bye into Saturday’s semifinals.

Class 4A at FW North

Yorktown seeks to repeat as sectional champ. The No. 1 Tigers open Tuesday against Huntington North.

Shelbyville drew Bloomington North in the opening round.

Class 3A at Wapahani

     Defending state champ New Castle opens its title defense Thursday against Blackford. Delta opens the tourney Tuesday against Hamilton Heights.
