NP’s Voelz wins state title, PH’s Jones Mental Attitude Award

New Palestine's Sam Voelz and Pendleton Heights' Parker Jones finished 1-2 in the 800 meters at the IHSAA State Finals.

The Hoosier Heritage Conference was well-represented on the top two steps of the podium Friday at the IHSAA boys track and field State Finals.

Sam Voelz won New Palestine’s first-ever boys track and field state championship in the 800 meters, with Pendleton Heights’ Parker Jones finishing second, giving the HHC a 1-2 finish in the event.

Voelz won the event with a time of 1:52.60, with Jones running 1:52.62.

Jones also finished the evening as the recipient of the prestigious Mental Attitude Award.

New Palestine also had two other state runner-up finishes to tally 26 points and finish sixth at the meet. The Dragons’ 4×800 relay of Spencer Corey, Caleb Eagleson, Chase Crowder and Voelz was runner-up to Carmel. NP’s 4×400 relay of Colby Jenkins, Corey, Voelz and Brady Walden finished second to North Central.

Jones placed in two events. In addition to his state runner-up finish in the 800, he was fifth in the 1600, giving the Arabians 13 points on the day. PH finished 14th in the state.
